Chapter 6 - The Custody Ambush

Her name was Aurora.
For the first month of her life, we lived in a bubble of bliss. But outside the estate walls, Victor was plotting. Backed into a corner, facing federal charges for his hidden offshore accounts, he found a desperate ally: Julian, Victoria’s estranged nephew.
Julian had assumed he would inherit the Thorne empire. My miraculous return had ruined his life. He secretly funded Victor’s legal campaign, providing him with millions to hire the most vicious family law attorneys in the country.
The subpoena arrived on a Tuesday.
Victor Sterling vs. Maya Thorne. Petition for Sole Legal and Physical Custody.
The document alleged I was unstable, suffering from postpartum psychosis, and a flight risk due to my newfound wealth.
“They want a psychological evaluation,” my lead attorney, a razor-sharp woman named Diane, explained in the estate’s boardroom. “They are going to drag your foster care history through the mud. They want to prove you are broken.”
I looked at Aurora, sleeping peacefully in her bassinet next to me.
“They think they can break me?” I asked, a cold, calculating calmness washing over me. I looked at Victoria. “We don’t just win the custody battle. We take everything they have left.”
