Chapter 20 - The Legacy

Later that night, long after the guests had gone home and Leo was fast asleep in his racecar bed, Matteo sat in his grand study.
The room was much like the one where this all began, lined with mahogany and leather. But the atmosphere was entirely different. There were no secrets hiding in the shadows. There were no envelopes shoved under rugs.
The heavy wooden doors opened, and Clara walked in, carrying two cups of chamomile tea. She set one on his desk and came around to sit on his lap. Matteo instantly abandoned his paperwork, wrapping his arms around her and burying his face in her shoulder.
"You work too much, Don Rossi," she teased, running her fingers through his dark hair.
"I am building an empire that is completely legitimate," Matteo replied, looking up at her. "So that when Leo takes over, and when our daughter grows up, they will never have to wash blood off their hands."
Clara looked at the man she had married. He was still feared. He was still lethal. But he was also a devoted father and a fiercely loving husband.
She remembered the terrified housekeeper she used to be, trembling in the hallway while her son exposed a traitor. That woman was gone, replaced by a queen who ruled beside her king.
"We built something beautiful out of a nightmare, Matteo," Clara whispered, kissing him softly.
Matteo looked at the golden light spilling across his desk, illuminating framed photos of Clara, Leo, and the ultrasound of their daughter.

"We didn't just build it, Clara," Matteo said, his voice a low, contented rumble. "We earned it. And God help anyone who ever tries to take it away."
He pulled her into his chest, entirely at peace in the empire they had built together.
