Chapter 16 - The Past Returns

Three months passed. The transition of power was absolute. With the Falcones decimated, the Rossi syndicate controlled the city with an iron grip, but under Clara’s influence, the violence dropped significantly. Matteo began shifting his operations into legitimate real estate and shipping, washing his money clean.
Clara was no longer the housekeeper. She was the Donna. She wore tailored designer suits, sat at the head of the table during Matteo’s meetings, and managed the syndicate’s finances with a brilliant, ruthless efficiency that shocked even Matteo’s oldest capos.
But ghosts rarely stay buried.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Clara was leaving a charity luncheon downtown, flanked by two of her massive bodyguards. As she stepped toward her armored SUV, a man stepped out of an alleyway, blocking her path.
He looked older, haggard, and smelled of cheap beer, but Clara recognized the cruel set of his jaw instantly.
It was David. Her ex-husband.
"Well, well, well," David sneered, slipping a hand into his jacket pocket. "Look at you, Clara. Playing dress-up with the mob. I’ve been looking for you for four years."
The two bodyguards instantly drew their weapons, aiming directly at David's chest.
Clara’s blood ran cold, the old, familiar terror threatening to choke her. But then she remembered the heavy diamond on her left hand. She wasn't a victim anymore.
"Lower your weapons," Clara ordered her guards. Her voice was steady, cold, and dripping with authority.
The guards hesitated, but obeyed, keeping their hands hovering over their holsters.
Clara took a step forward, looking down at the man who used to make her cower in corners.

"You made a mistake coming here, David," she said flatly.
"You took my kid," he snarled. "I want money, Clara. A million dollars, or I go to the feds and tell them the new mafia queen is a runaway rat."
