Chapter 9 - The Trial

Eight months later, the federal courthouse in Atlanta was a media circus.

Mark’s defense attorney tried every dirty trick in the book. He tried to claim the ledger was a fake. He tried to claim the audio was AI-generated. But when Evelyn took the stand, the entire courtroom was spellbound.

My mother, though still carrying a faint scar under her eye, spoke with incredible dignity and strength. She didn't sound like a confused, delusional woman. She sounded like a hero. She looked Mark dead in the eye and recounted every threat, every lie, and the physical assault.

Then, it was my turn.

I took the stand in my full dress uniform. I dismantled Mark’s character piece by piece. I laid out the financial discrepancies, the gaslighting, and the events at the cabin.

Mark sat at the defense table, his head buried in his hands. He didn't even testify in his own defense. The cowardice that had always defined him was finally on public display.

The jury deliberated for less than four hours.

Guilty on all counts. Racketeering, extortion, attempted murder, and civil rights violations under the color of law.

When the judge handed down a sentence of forty-five years in federal prison with no possibility of parole, Mark finally broke. He openly wept as the US Marshals dragged him away.

I felt absolutely nothing for him. He was a ghost.
