Chapter 3 - The Blue Wall of Silence

By dawn, the situation at the precinct had morphed from a domestic dispute into a high-stakes cover-up.
I sat in my mother’s hospital room, typing furiously on my laptop. I had inserted the flash drive and cracked Mark's rudimentary password. Evelyn was right. The ledger was a goldmine of corruption. But what terrified me was the second column of the spreadsheet. It wasn't just Mark.
Captain Miller’s name was on it. So was the district judge who had quietly approved the psychiatric hold for my mother.
My phone buzzed. It was Deputy Ramirez, calling from a burner number.
"Major Hayes," Ramirez whispered urgently. "You need to get your mother out of that hospital. Now."
"What's going on, Ramirez?"
"Miller just released Mark on his own recognizance. They buried the audio recording. They're claiming the chain of custody was broken and the recording was doctored. Mark is claiming you planted it because you're suffering from combat PTSD and want a divorce."
A cold sweat broke out on my neck. The Blue Wall of Silence was closing in. They weren't just protecting a fellow cop; they were protecting their criminal syndicate.
"Where is Mark now?" I asked.
"He left the precinct ten minutes ago. He looked furious. Major, he signed out his service weapon."
"Thank you, Ramirez. Stay safe."
I hung up and looked at my mother. "Mom, get up. We’re leaving."

"Where are we going?" she asked, wincing as she swung her legs over the bed.
"To the one place local cops can't touch us."
