Chapter 2 - The ER and The Ledger

I left the precinct the moment the holding cell door slammed shut on my husband. The drive to the hospital was a blur of adrenaline and heartbreak. For five years, I had slept next to a monster. I had let him gaslight my mother. I had blindly trusted the badge on his chest.
When I burst into the ER, I found my mother in Trauma Bay 3.
Evelyn was sitting up in bed, a white bandage wrapped thickly around her head, a dark purple contusion swelling under her left eye. When she saw me, she broke down in tears.
"Mom," I choked out, rushing to her side and wrapping my arms around her fragile frame. "I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry I didn't listen."
"You're here," she whispered, gripping my uniform shirt. "You believed me."
"He's in a cell, Mom. He’s going to prison. But I need to know why he did this. What did you find in his office?"
Evelyn’s breathing hitched. She looked around nervously before reaching under her hospital gown. She pulled out a small, blood-stained flash drive on a lanyard.
"I was over at your house yesterday feeding the dog while you were on duty," she explained, her voice trembling. "I went into Mark's study to find a pen. He had left his safe unlocked. This was sitting right on top."
I took the flash drive. It was heavy, encased in military-grade metal.
"I plugged it into his laptop," Evelyn continued. "Sarah, he isn't just a corrupt cop. He's running an extortion ring. There were spreadsheets. Names of local business owners, undocumented immigrants, people who can't go to the police. He’s been shaking them down for protection money. Millions of dollars, Sarah."
The pieces slammed into place. The expensive vacations Mark had booked. The luxury watches he claimed he bought at police auctions. The way he aggressively isolated me from our joint finances, claiming he wanted to "spoil" me.

"He came to my house tonight because he realized the drive was missing," Evelyn said. "He was going to kill me and frame it as a psychiatric accident to get his secrets back."
I squeezed the flash drive so hard my fingernails cut into my palm. Mark thought he was dealing with a naive wife. He forgot he was married to a Military Police Major who specialized in counter-intelligence.
