Chapter 8 - The House of Cards Collapses

The arrests sent shockwaves through the entire state.
When the sun rose, the FBI raided the sheriff’s precinct. Captain Miller, Mark, and six other deputies were perp-walked out of their own station in federal handcuffs. The local news crews, the same ones Mark had used to paint me as insane, were now broadcasting his downfall in high definition.
I stood in the background with Special Agent Thorne, watching Mark being shoved into the back of an armored transport vehicle. He looked pathetic. Stripped of his badge, his gun, and his power, he was just a cowardly man who beat up an elderly woman.
"We seized four million dollars in cash from the cabin," Thorne told me, handing me a coffee. "Plus the ledger led us to the dirty judge. He’s stepping down and cooperating for a plea deal. You dismantled an entire syndicate in three days, Major."
"I didn't do it," I said, taking a sip of the coffee. "My mother did. She was the brave one."

Later that day, I returned to Fort Sterling. When I walked into the secure quarters, my mother was watching the news. When she saw me, she burst into happy tears, holding her arms open.
"It's over, Mom," I said, hugging her tight. "They can't hurt you ever again."
