Chapter 6 - A Dangerous Alliance

The revelation of the shredded lab report shifted the dynamic inside Vance Manor from a household of recovery to a war room. Julian immediately contacted his most trusted private investigator, a former federal agent named Marcus Vance—his estranged younger brother who operated in the grey areas of corporate intelligence.

Within hours, Marcus arrived at the estate. He was a sleeker, more cynical version of Julian, wearing a leather jacket and carrying a briefcase packed with high-tech encryption gear. They gathered in the basement security bunker, a room Nora had never been allowed into before.

“If we take these shredded strips to the police now, any competent defense attorney will throw them out,” Marcus explained, scanning the reconstructed document under a UV light. “Chain of custody is compromised. Elena can claim someone planted it in her trash after she was kicked out. We need hard, undeniable proof linking her to the supplier of the aconite.”

Nora sat at the conference table, her notebook open. “Before Sarah passed away, Elena wasn't living here, but she visited almost every afternoon to bring Sarah specialized herbal teas from a holistic boutique downtown. She claimed it was to help with Sarah’s chronic migraines.”

Julian slammed his fist into his palm. “The boutique. The owner was a man named Dr. Aris—Elena’s personal nutritionist.”

“If we pressure Dr. Aris legally, he’ll spook and warn Elena,” Marcus warned, leaning back in his chair. “We need someone to go inside, pose as a client looking for something… discrete, and get Aris on a hidden camera admitting he supplied the toxin to Elena.”

Silence fell over the room. Julian instantly shook his head. “No. Absolutely not. I know what you’re thinking, Marcus, and I won't allow it.”

“I’ll do it,” Nora said firmly, standing up.

“Nora, no!” Julian grabbed her arm, his green eyes burning with protective intensity. “Elena is already dangerous. If her associates realize you’re investigating Sarah’s murder, they won't hesitate to eliminate you too.”

“They think I’m just a dumb, recently fired nanny who wants revenge on you,” Nora argued logically, refusing to back down. “I’m the only one who can walk into that shop without triggering alarms. Julian, she tried to ruin my life. She tried to steal your son. Let me help you finish this.”
