Chapter 3 - The Weight of Apology

Once the screams of Elena faded into the upper wing of the estate, Julian dismissed the gossiping household staff with a single, sharp wave of his hand. The maids scattered like scattered birds, leaving the grand foyer in heavy, suffocating silence. Julian turned to his son. Leo had dropped to his knees, sobbing quietly, the adrenaline of his bravery finally giving way to exhaustion.

Nora didn’t wait for permission. She abandoned her duffel bag, rushed across the cold marble, and dropped to her knees beside the boy. She wrapped her arms securely around his small, trembling frame, pulling his head to her chest. “I’ve got you, sweetheart,” she whispered, rocking him gently. “You were so brave, Leo. You saved me. Thank you, my brave little knight.”

Julian stood watching them, a massive lump forming in his throat. He had spent the last two years burying himself in boardroom meetings, mergers, and international flights, attempting to outrun the grief of losing his wife, Sarah. In his absence, he had left his home—and his son—vulnerable to a predator like Elena, whom he had courted out of mere convenience and social expectation.

Slowly, the billionaire knelt on the floor beside the nanny and his son. It was a humbling posture for a man who commanded a global empire. He reached out hesitantly, his fingers brushing against Nora’s bruised cheek. She flinched slightly at the contact, and Julian’s jaw tightened with guilt.

“Nora,” he said, his voice husky with raw emotion. “I don’t have the words to express how deeply sorry I am. I was blind. I let that woman terrify my son and humiliate the only person who has kept this family from falling apart.”

Nora met his intense green eyes, her expression soft yet resilient. “I didn’t stay here for your money or your prestige, Mr. Vance. I stayed because Leo needed someone who wouldn't leave him in the dark.”

Julian looked at his son, who was clinging to Nora’s sweater as if she were a lifeline. “Please,” Julian said softly, his pride completely stripped away. “Don’t leave us. Stay, Nora. Name your salary, name your conditions—just please, don’t walk out that door.”
