Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Study

By midnight, the storm had escalated into a full-blown gale, but inside Julian’s private mahogany-paneled study, the atmosphere was burning with quiet intensity. Leo had finally fallen asleep, exhausted from the evening's drama, with Nora sitting by his bedside until his breathing grew deep and even. Now, she sat across from Julian’s massive executive desk, a warm mug of tea resting between her hands.

Julian paced the length of the Persian rug, a glass of amber scotch untouched in his hand. “Elena didn’t just frame you out of jealousy, Nora,” he said, breaking the silence. “I’ve been going through the estate’s security logs and financial ledgers for the past two hours. Something doesn’t add up.”

Nora took a sip of her tea, her mind racing. “What do you mean? I always knew she disliked me, but framing me for grand larceny feels… desperate. As if she needed me out of the house immediately.”

“Exactly,” Julian said, stopping to lean against the edge of his desk. He projected a document from his tablet onto the wall monitor. “Look at this. Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, the trustees of Sarah’s family foundation are arriving for their biennial audit. Part of that audit involves a mandatory mental and physical welfare assessment of Leo, as the primary heir to her estate.”

Nora’s eyes widened as she read the legal jargon on the screen. “If I was gone, and Leo was distraught or throwing tantrums—”

“Elena would have declared him psychologically unstable,” Julian finished grimly, his face darkening. “She had already drafted a medical proxy document with a private psychiatrist on her payroll. If she got control of Leo’s medical proxy, she would automatically gain voting control over his thirty percent stake in Vance Industries until he turned eighteen.”

Nora felt a chill run through her blood that had nothing to do with the drafty room. “She wasn’t just trying to get rid of a nanny,” Nora whispered, looking up at Julian in horror. “She was staging a corporate coup using your son as a pawn.”

“And you were the only person standing in her way because you monitor Leo’s daily routine, his meds, and his schooling,” Julian said, his eyes locking onto hers with newfound respect and fierce protectiveness. “This war isn't over, Nora. Elena is out of the house, but she won't go down without fighting.”
