Chapter 5 - The Hunt Begins

Morning broke over the Cascade Mountains, painting the snow in brilliant shades of gold and pink.

The storm had finally passed, leaving behind a silent, frozen world.

Sarah was resting in the Intensive Care Unit, hooked up to a ventilator but stable.

Nathan sat beside her bed, holding her hand, refusing to leave her side.

His phone buzzed in his pocket.

It was Deputy Miller.

"Dr. Pierce, we found Kane's truck abandoned on the highway," Miller reported.

"He stole a snowmobile from a nearby cabin and disappeared."

"Find him," Nathan replied, his voice devoid of any emotion.

"We are doing everything we can, but he is a survivalist, he knows these woods," Miller warned.

Nathan hung up the phone, a dark, dangerous thought taking root in his mind.

He knew Marcus would not just run away and start a new life.

Marcus was a proud, violent man who hated losing control of his possessions.

He would realize the children were missing.

He would realize Sarah was not dead.

He would come looking for them to finish the job.

Nathan stood up and kissed Sarah's bandaged forehead.

"I will be right back, sis," he whispered.

He walked out of the hospital and called the head of his private security firm.

"I need armed guards at the hospital, and I need a tactical team at my house immediately," Nathan ordered.
