Chapter 2 - Into the Storm

The wail of police sirens finally cut through the howling wind.

Two local deputies rushed into the glass mansion, covered in snow and shivering.

Nathan had already stabilized the children, wrapping them in thermal blankets and placing them on the plush sofas.

"Dr. Pierce, what happened here?" Deputy Miller asked, taking out his notepad.

"My niece walked through the blizzard with these babies," Nathan explained, his jaw clenched tight.

"Her father, Marcus Kane, attacked my sister at their home down the mountain."

The deputies exchanged a dark look, clearly familiar with Marcus's reputation in town.

"We need to get an ambulance up here for the kids," Miller said into his radio.

"The kids are stable under my care, but my sister is bleeding out on a kitchen floor," Nathan demanded.

"I am coming with you to that house right now."

Miller tried to argue, citing protocols and the danger of the storm.

Nathan simply grabbed his heavy winter coat and a portable medical bag.

"I am the best trauma surgeon in this state, and that is my sister," Nathan said with terrifying calm.

"You either give me a ride in your cruiser, or I will follow you in my truck."

The deputies nodded, knowing better than to argue with a desperate man.

Nathan turned to Rosa, who was rocking one of the babies to sleep.

"Lock every door, turn on the security system, and do not let anyone inside," he ordered.

With one last look at Lily, Nathan walked out into the blinding white storm.
