Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Tea

The afternoon before the press conference, Cassandra knocked gently on Maya's door.

"Maya, darling, may I come in?" Cassandra asked, her voice dripping with fake sweetness.

Maya opened the door cautiously, knowing better than to trust this woman.

Cassandra was holding a silver tray with an elegant antique teapot and two cups.

"I know we got off on the wrong foot," Cassandra said, walking in uninvited.

"I want to apologize for my horrific behavior at the gala."

She poured the steaming, fragrant tea into the porcelain cups.

"Let us drink to peace, and to your new life," Cassandra offered, pushing a cup toward Maya.

Maya looked at the tea, and then at Cassandra's overly eager eyes.

Growing up on the streets and in group homes had taught Maya one important lesson.

Never trust a sudden act of kindness from an enemy.

"Thank you, Cassandra," Maya smiled politely.

"But I actually just remembered I left my phone in the bathroom."

Maya turned around and walked away for exactly five seconds.

When she returned, Cassandra was already sipping from her own cup.

"Drink up, darling, it's getting cold," Cassandra urged.

Maya picked up her cup, brought it to her lips, and pretended to take a sip.

In reality, she let the liquid spill quietly into the thick fabric of her dark napkin.

Cassandra's eyes gleamed with evil satisfaction.

"I think I need to go rest before the big event," Maya said, faking a sudden yawn.

Cassandra smiled, standing up gracefully.

"Sleep well, sweet girl," Cassandra whispered as she left the room.
