Chapter 3 - The Blood Tie

Dr. Evans arrived at the penthouse within twenty minutes, carrying a black medical case.
Maya sat nervously on the edge of a plush armchair, rolling up her sleeve.
The doctor drew a small vial of blood from her arm, and then took a swab from Arthur.
"I will rush these to the private lab," Dr. Evans promised.
"We will have the results by morning."
Cassandra watched from the shadows of the hallway, a wicked plan forming in her mind.
She pulled out her phone and sent a quick, encrypted text message to her personal assistant.
I need a million dollars wired to Dr. Evans' offshore account immediately.
Cassandra was not going to let some street rat take away the billions she had waited twelve years for.
Meanwhile, Arthur sat beside Maya, showing her old photo albums.
He pointed to a picture of a little girl holding a stuffed rabbit with a missing ear.
Maya gasped, her eyes widening in absolute shock.
"I still have that rabbit," Maya whispered, her heart pounding against her ribs.
"It was in the box of things the orphanage gave me."
Arthur smiled warmly, feeling the final pieces of his broken heart slowly stitching back together.
Down in the lobby, Dr. Evans was walking toward his car when Cassandra intercepted him.
"Doctor, we need to have a little chat about those test results," she purred, slipping a heavy envelope into his pocket.
The doctor looked nervously at the envelope, then back at Cassandra's terrifyingly calm face.

"Make sure the test comes back negative," she ordered.
"Or your career is over."
