Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

Two weeks later, the dust had somewhat settled. Marcus had been officially fired from his firm. He was living in a cheap extended-stay motel on the outskirts of the city, eating fast food and avoiding calls from debt collectors.

He finally secured a meeting with Elena to sign the divorce papers. They met in Veronica’s sleek downtown office.

When Marcus walked in, he looked ten years older. The tailored suits hung loosely on his frame. The arrogant sparkle in his eyes had been completely extinguished.

Elena sat across the massive glass conference table, looking flawless in a white power suit, radiating untouchable success.

“Elena, please,” Marcus started, his voice hollow. “You’ve taken my job, my home, my money. Maya won't even speak to me. You won. Can’t you just give me a little bit of equity to get back on my feet? After everything we had?”

Elena leaned forward, her expression completely unreadable.

“After everything we had?” she repeated softly. “What we had, Marcus, was an illusion. You played the role of the perfect husband while you built a secret life financed by my hard work. You didn't respect me. You merely utilized me.”

She slid the divorce agreement across the table.

“This document leaves you with your car, your clothes, and your personal debts. You get zero equity, zero alimony, and zero access to my assets. If you do not sign it right now, Veronica will submit your forged expense reports to the district attorney for criminal fraud charges.”

Marcus looked at the pen as if it were a poisonous snake. He looked at Elena, searching for a trace of the woman who used to look at him with love. He found nothing but a reflection of his own ruin.

With a shaking hand, Marcus picked up the pen and signed his name.
