Chapter 1 - The Call That Stopped Time

The silence in the first-class cabin was thick enough to choke on. The gentle hum of the airplane engines felt entirely disconnected from the explosive tension radiating from row two. Marcus’s mouth was still slightly open, his charismatic, million-dollar smile replaced by the ashen pallor of a man staring down the barrel of a loaded gun. Maya was practically hyperventilating, her hands trembling as she pulled the crimson scarf tighter around her neck, as if it could somehow shield her from Elena’s icy gaze.
Elena didn't blink. She didn't raise her voice. She simply held the phone to her ear, listening to the dial tone ring through the secure corporate line she knew by heart.
“Elena? What are you doing here? Let’s just… let’s just calm down,” Marcus finally stammered, his voice dropping to a frantic whisper. He reached out, trying to touch her arm.
Elena took one step back, out of his reach. Her eyes never left his.
“Richard,” Elena said smoothly as the line connected. She was calling Richard Sterling, the CEO of Marcus’s investment firm. The man who held Marcus’s impending promotion to Managing Director in the palm of his hand.
Marcus’s eyes widened in sheer terror. He knew that name. He mouthed the word no.
“Elena, my favorite VP,” Richard’s booming voice came through the receiver, entirely unaware of the slaughter about to take place. “To what do I owe the pleasure so early on a Wednesday?”
“Richard, I apologize for the unexpected call. I’m actually on a flight to Phoenix right now,” Elena said, her voice dripping with polished professional grace. “I’m calling regarding the Sterling-Vanguard merger. I’ve decided to pull my firm’s PR backing for the acquisition.”
Marcus gripped the armrests. That PR backing was the only reason the Vanguard board was even listening to Marcus’s pitches. Elena was the cornerstone of his entire six-month project.
“What? Elena, we close on Friday. Marcus assured me your team was locked in,” Richard said, his tone instantly shifting from jovial to sharp.
“Marcus has been a bit distracted, it seems. In fact, he’s on this flight with me right now. Along with his assistant, Maya,” Elena said casually, looking down at Maya, who squeezed her eyes shut as a tear leaked out. “It appears Marcus has been using company funds to expense romantic getaways disguised as client meetings for the past six months. Since my firm’s integrity is paramount, I cannot in good conscience attach our name to an executive team that fundamentally mismanages corporate capital.”
There was a dead, heavy silence on the line.
“Elena… are you telling me what I think you’re telling me?” Richard asked, his voice lethally calm.
“I am, Richard. I highly suggest you audit his expense reports for the Dallas and Miami trips. Have a wonderful morning.”

Elena ended the call. She slipped the phone back into her designer tote. Marcus looked as though he had been physically struck. His career, his promotion, his reputation—all incinerated in less than sixty seconds.
“Enjoy your flight, darling,” Elena whispered. She turned on her heel and walked back to her seat in coach, the sound of her own steady heartbeat the only thing she heard.
