Chapter 7 - Elena’s Desperate Blackmail

The atmosphere inside Elena Vance’s luxury apartment was a suffocating cocktail of panic and cheap Pinot Grigio. The blinds were drawn shut against the paparazzi camped out on the sidewalk below, and the floor was littered with crumpled legal notices from Vance Development’s human resources department terminating her contract for gross misconduct.

Elena paced the length of her living room, her hands shaking as she clutched her phone to her ear. When Julian finally answered, his voice was barely a raspy whisper, sounding like a man who had spent the last forty-eight hours screaming at brick walls.

"What do you want, Elena?" Julian barked. "My lawyers told me not to speak to you. The DA is already trying to link your PR firm's accounts to the Briggs payments!"

"Don't you dare play the cautious client with me, Julian!" Elena shrieked, throwing an empty wine glass against the wall, where it shattered into a hundred sparkling fragments. "I am looking at ten to twelve years in a federal penitentiary because I used my cousin’s infrastructure to clean your dirty bribery money! You promised me a ring! You promised me a seat on the executive board!"

"I don't have a board anymore!" Julian yelled back, his own panic matching hers. "Maya took the proxies! She froze my capital! I'm trying to liquidate my watch collection just to pay my criminal defense retainer!"

"Then you better find some cash, darling," Elena said, her voice dropping into a venomous, calculating sneer that made Julian's blood run cold. "Because before I let Maya Sterling send me to a minimum-security camp to sew uniforms, I will give the federal prosecutor the audio recordings I kept of every single pillow talk conversation we had over the last six months."

Silence descended over the line, heavy and terrifying.

"What recordings?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling.

"You didn't think I trusted you without collateral, did you?" Elena laughed, a desperate, hysterical sound. "I have you on tape explaining exactly how you bribed the building inspectors on the waterfront project to ignore the foundation cracks. I have you laughing about using Maya's signature on forged tax documents. You wire fifty thousand dollars into my mother's account in Boca Raton by midnight tonight to pay for my defense team, Julian, or I deliver those files to Victoria Sterling personally tomorrow morning."

"You're insane," Julian choked out. "That’s extortion!"

"No, Julian," Elena replied coldly. "That’s survival. Welcome to the real world."
