Chapter 1 - The Aftermath at the Kitchen Island

The line went dead, but Julian remained glued to the marble kitchen island, his hand trembling against his ear. The silence in the house wasn’t just empty; it was suffocating. For seven years, this mansion had hummed with the predictable cadence of domestic life—Leo’s action figures scattered across the Persian rugs, the faint scent of vanilla simmering on the stove, and Maya’s quiet, reassuring presence humming in the background. Now, the air smelled only of stale lemon polish and impending ruin.
He stared down at the red envelope, his eyes scanning the photograph again. The image was crystal clear: Councilman Briggs, his face flushed with champagne, accepting a sleek leather attaché case from Elena on the terrace of the St. Regis. Julian’s chest tightened as a cold sweat broke out across his forehead. That meeting had been conducted under maximum discretion. No cell phones, no reservations under their real names. How had Maya gotten a photographer on that terrace?
"She's just trying to scare me," he muttered aloud, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. He tossed the ruby necklace box onto the counter and scrambled for his phone, dialing Elena’s private number.
She answered on the second ring, her voice dripping with the lazy indulgence of an afternoon spent drinking bellinis. "Did you like the rubies, darling? I'm already clearing out a drawer in my dressing room for them."
"Shut up and listen," Julian hissed, pacing toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pool. "Maya is gone. She took Leo. She left a stack of divorce papers and a forensic trace of the Briggs kickback."
A sharp intake of breath crackled over the speaker. "What? That's impossible. She doesn't even know what a zoning variance is! She spends her days organizing PTA bake sales and buying organic groceries!"
"You don't understand," Julian roared, his veneer of smooth corporate control shattering completely. "She didn't just find the affair, Elena. She found the offshore shell companies. She found your cousin’s ghost contracting firm. My personal checking account is already frozen, and when I tried to log into the corporate treasury portal just now, my credentials were revoked!"

Before Elena could formulate a response, the heavy oak front door clicked open. Julian spun around, expecting Maya to walk back in with a tearful demand for an explanation. Instead, two men in dark, tailored suits stepped into the foyer, holding briefcases and wearing expressions of absolute stone.
"Mr. Julian Vance?" the taller one asked, flashing a badge from the District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division. "We have a warrant to seize all personal computing devices and financial records on this property. I suggest you step away from that kitchen island immediately."
