Chapter 2 - The Legal Reality

Harrison cleared his throat, desperately searching for an angle of control. "Look, General, whatever happened on the night of the wedding was an unfortunate miscommunication. But right now, we are dealing with Elena’s future. She has brain trauma. She is legally incapacitated. As her father and next of kin, I have a moral and fiduciary responsibility to manage her settlement fund and her rehabilitation."
"You are not her next of kin," I said softly.
My father’s head snapped toward me, his brow furrowing. "What did you just say?"
I reached into the pocket of my robe, pulling out my silver dog tags and a folded blue card. "Three years ago, before my second deployment to the Middle East, I updated my Military Medical Power of Attorney and my primary beneficiary designations. In our line of work, we don't leave our lives in the hands of people who treat us like corporate assets."
General Thorne opened the binder, flipping to a tabbed section and turning it toward my parents. "Brigadier General Vance named Lieutenant Colonel Sarah Jenkins as her medical proxy, and the Wounded Warrior Foundation as the sole executor of her estate in the event of cognitive incapacitation. You have zero legal authority over her medical decisions, her military pension, or any financial settlement resulting from her service."
Harrison’s face turned bright crimson. He slammed his hand onto the table, rattling the binder. "We are your biological parents! I spent hundreds of thousands of dollars putting you through private school, paying for your equestrian lessons, building your connections in this city! You owe this family!"

"I paid for my own education with an ROTC scholarship, Father," I replied coldly, feeling the throbbing pain in my collarbone recede beneath a wave of clarity. "And I have paid for my own life with twenty-four years of service to this country. You didn't come here today to comfort your daughter. You came here to steal six million dollars to save your failing real estate development firm."
My mother gasped, looking at my father in shock. The room seemed to shrink around them as the carefully constructed illusion of the wealthy, philanthropic Vance dynasty began to crack wide open.
