Chapter 14 - The Brother-in-Law's Bargain

As the federal indictment loomed closer, the rats began leaping from the sinking ship of Vance Enterprises with ruthless efficiency. The most strategic defection came from Julian Pierce, Chloe’s estranged husband of barely one month.
Julian was a calculating venture capitalist who cared about two things: his family’s old-money reputation and avoiding federal prison. When his forensic accountants realized that his short-lived marriage to Chloe had entangled his financial accounts with my father’s money-laundering schemes, Julian immediately instructed his legal team to approach the U.S. Attorney’s office with an offer to cooperate.
I was invited to attend the proffer session at the Department of Justice via secure video link from Walter Reed. On my screen, Julian sat next to his high-powered Boston attorney, looking immaculate in a tailored suit, speaking to Prosecutor Ross with practiced, cold precision.
"I had no knowledge of Harrison’s fraudulent lending practices prior to the marriage," Julian stated clearly into the microphone. "However, during the wedding reception on Saturday night, approximately ten minutes after Harrison received the phone call regarding General Vance’s helicopter crash, he pulled me into the country club’s private wine cellar."
Prosecutor Ross leaned forward over her notes. "What did Mr. Vance state to you during that meeting, Mr. Pierce?"
"He told me that his liquidity problems were officially solved," Julian testified without a flicker of emotion. "He explicitly said, 'My eldest daughter just went down in a military chopper. The contractor liability fund and her military life insurance will net the family twelve million by the end of the month. I will wire your two-million-dollar capital injection into your hedge fund the moment the probate clears.'"
I closed my eyes briefly, feeling a familiar, cold numbness wash over me. To hear it confirmed in sterile legal terms—to know that while my chest was being cut open to relieve cardiac tamponade, my biological father was in a wine cellar using my potential death as a closing pitch for a business deal—was the final severance of any lingering emotional attachment I had to that family.
"Will you testify to this conversation before a federal grand jury, Mr. Pierce?" Ross asked.
"I will testify to whatever you need, Counselor," Julian replied smoothly, "provided my firm receives full immunity from any civil or criminal asset forfeiture related to Vance Enterprises."

"We will take it under advisement," Ross said, terminating the feed. She turned to look at my camera on her laptop screen. "We have him, General. Between Julian’s testimony, Chloe’s deposition, and the electronic signatures on the loan documents, your father is looking at a mandatory minimum of twenty-five years in federal prison."
"Make sure the indictment includes the identity theft charges, Katherine," I said quietly. "He didn't just steal from me. He compromised the integrity of a military officer’s security clearance. Let the federal sentencing guidelines reflect the full weight of that betrayal."
