Chapter 11 - The Subpoena and the Raid

Monday morning did not arrive with a quiet legal notice; it arrived with a tactical federal execution. At exactly 0600 hours, a convoy of six black SUVs carrying special agents from the FBI, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division converged on the twenty-story glass tower of Vance Enterprises in downtown Seattle, as well as my parents' sprawling waterfront estate.
I sat in the command center at the DCIS field office in Alexandria, watching the encrypted live feed from the lead agent’s body camera during the residential execution.
The heavy oak front door of the estate was opened by my father, who was still in his silk pajamas, holding a cup of espresso. The lead FBI agent stepped across the threshold, holding up a federal search warrant signed by a U.S. District Judge just four hours prior.
"Harrison Vance, we have a federal warrant to search these premises and seize all electronic devices, physical ledgers, and financial records pertaining to Vance Enterprises, its subsidiary holdings, and the unauthorized use of military identification credentials," the agent announced calmly, as a dozen armed investigators flooded into the grand foyer.
"This is an outrage!" Harrison shouted, his espresso cup clattering onto the marble floor as an agent instructed him to step aside. "I am a respected business leader! You cannot storm into my home like I am a common drug cartel boss!"
From the top of the grand staircase, Evelyn appeared in her robe, screaming hysterically as two female agents began securing her personal laptops, cell phones, and the hidden wall safe behind her vanity mirror.
"Where is my daughter?" Evelyn shrieked at the cameras, her carefully sculpted high-society facade completely disintegrating. "Elena did this! She is a monster! She is destroying her own family out of spite!"

The lead agent looked up at her, his expression entirely devoid of emotion. "Ma'am, Brigadier General Vance is currently serving her country under oath. You are under investigation for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, federal identity theft, and attempted extortion of an active-duty officer. I suggest you contact legal counsel immediately."
I watched the screens as filing cabinets were emptied, hard drives were cloned, and my father was forced to sit on his own sofa while investigators cataloged the wreckage of his empire. There was no joy in my heart—only the solemn, heavy resolution of an officer clearing a battlefield of hostile threats.
