Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Truth

The silence in the grand foyer was deafening.
Marisol felt as though all the air had been sucked out of the enormous room.
She stared at Diego, the man she had loved in her youth, the man who now stood before her like a stranger.
His dark eyes were wide, completely stripped of their usual cold, business-like armor.
He was looking at her, but his gaze kept drifting back to Valentina.
The little girl was still clutching the golden button, completely unaware of the massive storm breaking around her.
"Answer me, Marisol," Diego demanded, his voice dropping to a raw, painful whisper.
"Why didn't you tell me I had a daughter?"
Marisol took a deep, shaky breath, feeling the sting of tears threatening to spill from her eyes.
"I tried, Diego," she whispered, her voice cracking under the emotional weight of three long years.
"I tried everything to reach you when I found out I was pregnant."
Diego stepped closer, his imposing figure casting a shadow over the cold marble floor.
"What are you talking about?" he asked, his brow furrowing in deep confusion.
"I called your office every single day for a month," Marisol explained, her heart pounding furiously against her ribs.
"I left messages with your assistant, I wrote letters, I even waited outside your old apartment building."
Diego’s face went completely pale.
"I never received a single message," he said, his voice laced with sudden, rising anger.
"They told me you had moved on," Marisol continued, the painful memories flooding back to her mind.
"Your assistant, Roberto, told me you were engaged to a wealthy heiress and that you never wanted to see me again."
Diego’s fists clenched at his sides, his knuckles turning stark white.
"Roberto told you that?" he growled, a dangerous fire igniting in his eyes.
"He handed me a check for fifty thousand pesos and told me to disappear," Marisol said, a single tear finally escaping and rolling down her cheek.
"I ripped the check in half and promised myself I would never beg for your attention again."
Diego looked down at Valentina, who was watching him with those large, innocent dark eyes that mirrored his own.
He fell to his knees again, right there on the hard floor, completely disregarding his expensive tailored suit.
"I didn't know," Diego whispered, reaching out with a trembling hand to gently touch Valentina’s soft cheek.
"If I had known about her, if I had known about you, I would have burned the world down to find you both."
Valentina blinked, leaning into his warm touch just a little bit.

Marisol watched them, her chest tightening with an overwhelming mixture of grief and relief.
The truth was finally out, but she had no idea how they could possibly move forward from this shattered reality.
