Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

I thought the nightmare was finally over when Marcus was handed over to the rival syndicate.

I thought the debt was cleared, and the war was avoided.

I was fatally wrong.

Two nights later, I woke up to the smell of smoke and the blaring of alarms.

I sprang out of bed, grabbing Lily from her blankets, adrenaline surging through my veins.

I threw open the bedroom door, only to find Victor standing in the hallway.

He wasn't holding a gun to protect us.

He had a gun aimed directly at my chest.

"Victor?" I gasped, instinctively stepping back and shielding Lily with my body.

"Quiet," Victor snarled, his eyes wide and completely unhinged.

"Marcus told the rival boss everything before they killed him. They offered me triple what Silas pays me to open the back gates."

My blood ran completely cold.

Victor had betrayed us.

The man entrusted with protecting the manor had invited the wolves inside.

"You won't make it out alive," I warned him, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Silas will kill you."

"Silas is currently trapped in the east wing with twenty armed men," Victor laughed darkly.

"He's a dead man. And you're my ticket out of Chicago."

He grabbed my arm violently, yanking me forward so hard I almost dropped Lily.

I fought back, kicking and screaming, trying to tear his hand away from my skin.

Lily started crying, terrified by the sudden violence.

"Shut the kid up, or I will," Victor threatened, pressing the cold barrel of his gun against my temple.

Suddenly, the lights in the hallway flickered and died, plunging us into total darkness.

The emergency sirens stopped.

The silence that followed was far more terrifying than the alarms.

"What the hell?" Victor muttered, his grip loosening slightly in confusion.

From the shadows at the end of the hall, a voice darker than the night itself spoke out.

May you like

"You made a fatal mistake, Victor."

It was Silas.
