Chapter 3 - The Unseen Enemy

Paranoia became my closest companion.

Every shadow in the manor felt like a threat, every creak of the floorboards sounded like an intruder.

I kept Lily confined to the second floor, terrified that the men Silas warned me about would somehow breach the walls.

Silas, however, seemed to be everywhere.

I would catch him watching us from the doorway of the library when Lily was playing with her blocks on the rug.

I would see him in the courtyard, speaking in hushed, violent tones to his security men while his eyes tracked the window of our suite.

He was a ghost who had suddenly stepped into the light.

One rainy afternoon, the tension in the house snapped.

The blare of the estate’s security alarm shattered the quiet, shrieking like a wounded animal.

I grabbed Lily from the floor, my heart leaping into my throat as heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway.

The door to our suite burst open, and Silas rushed in, a matte black pistol gripped firmly in his hand.

"Get in the closet," he ordered, his eyes blazing with a lethal intensity.

"What's happening?" I cried out, holding a crying Lily tightly to my chest.

"They breached the perimeter," Silas growled, pushing me toward the heavy oak doors of the walk-in closet.

"Do not make a sound, and do not come out until I open this door."

He slammed the closet doors shut, plunging us into absolute darkness.

I huddled on the floor, wrapping my arms around my daughter, burying her face in my neck so her sobs would be muffled.

Outside, the muffled sounds of chaos erupted.

I heard men shouting, the shattering of expensive glass, and then, the deafening pop of gunfire.

Every gunshot made my body jerk violently, the smell of gunpowder seeping under the closet door.

I prayed to a God I hadn't spoken to in years, begging for Lily's safety.

Minutes stretched into hours, the silence returning as quickly as the violence had started.

I didn't move a single muscle.

Finally, the closet door handle clicked, and light flooded our small, cramped sanctuary.

Silas stood there, his white dress shirt stained with a horrifying amount of crimson blood.

I screamed, instinctively pulling Lily further back into the darkness.

"It's not my blood," Silas said quickly, dropping his weapon to the floor and holding his hands up to show he wasn't a threat.

He knelt down to my level, his dark eyes softening as he looked at my terrified daughter.

"You're safe now," he whispered, reaching out to wipe a stray tear from my cheek.

"I won't let them touch you."

In that blood-soaked moment, looking into the eyes of a killer, I felt the strangest sensation.

I felt completely, undeniably safe.
