Chapter 1 - The Shift in Power

The silence in the room was so thick it felt like I was drowning in it.

Victor’s grip on my shoulder tightened, his fingers digging into my collarbone like iron claws.

I winced from the pain, but my eyes never left Silas Vance.

He was still holding my daughter on his lap.

The most dangerous man in Chicago was looking at a four-year-old girl as if she had just deciphered a secret he had spent his entire life burying.

Slowly, Silas raised his hand and gestured to Victor.

"Let her go," Silas commanded, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.

Victor hesitated for a fraction of a second.

"Boss, she broke the rules," Victor argued, his voice laced with venom.

"She needs to learn her place in this house."

Silas didn't yell, nor did he reach for the silver revolver sitting inches away on the mahogany desk.

He simply shifted his dark gaze from Lily to Victor.

"I said, let her go," Silas repeated, the deadly calm in his tone making the air temperature drop.

Victor immediately released my shoulder and took a massive step backward, swallowing hard.

I rushed forward, my knees shaking uncontrollably as I reached the desk.

"I am so sorry, Mr. Vance," I gasped, tears of pure terror finally spilling over my eyelashes.

"The lock on our door broke, and she just wandered out before I could catch her."

I held my arms out to Lily, desperate to pull her away from the monster my husband had sold us to.

Silas looked at my trembling hands, his expression hardening into something unreadable.

He gently lifted Lily and placed her on her feet, patting her shoulder with surprising care.

Lily grabbed her worn stuffed bunny, completely oblivious to the fact that she had just danced with death.

"Go to your mother, little one," Silas murmured.

Lily skipped over to me, and I pulled her against my chest, burying my face in her soft hair.

"Victor," Silas said, standing up to his full, towering height.

"Move them out of the servant's quarters in the basement."

Victor’s head snapped up in shock.

"Sir?" Victor asked, clearly confused.

"Put them in the guest suite on the second floor," Silas ordered, turning his back to look out the massive bay window.

"And if that door ever fails to lock properly again, Victor, I will hold you personally responsible."

I stared at the broad expanse of Silas's back, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

I was a debt, a prisoner, a disposable pawn in their violent game.

But as I carried Lily out of that forbidden room, I realized something terrifying.

The rules of the game had just changed.
