Chapter 6 - The Setup

I sent a courier to their motel on Saturday morning with a handwritten note and a prepaid luxury car service. The note was simple: Let us talk. Bring Chloe. My attorney’s office, 2:00 PM.

When they arrived, they looked exhausted. Mark’s designer suit was wrinkled, and he had dark circles under his eyes. Chloe looked even worse; the smug, arrogant girl who had demanded my house was gone, replaced by a twitchy, nervous wreck.

They sat on the opposite side of the grand conference table. Arthur stood quietly in the corner.

“Mom,” Mark started, his voice cracking. “Please. We’ve learned our lesson. The motel is awful. Chloe is stressed. Just turn the trust back on, and we can compromise on the house.”

“Compromise?” I raised an eyebrow.

“We won't make you leave,” Chloe chimed in, trying to force a sweet smile. “You can stay in the guest wing. But we really need the deed signed over today. It’s... it’s about our future stability.”

I didn't yell. I didn't scowl. I simply reached into my folder and slid a single, thick document across the polished oak table.

“This is a comprehensive report from my private investigator,” I said smoothly. “It outlines exactly $842,000 in gambling debts owed by one Chloe Hastings to three different illegal bookmakers.”

Mark froze. He looked at the document, then at me, and finally at his fiancée.

“What is she talking about, Chloe?”

Chloe’s face drained of all color. She looked like she was going to be sick.
