Chapter 1 - The Sound of Shattering Glass

“Mom, what the hell is happening?” Mark’s voice was barely a whisper, though the panic vibrating through the speaker was undeniable.
I took a slow sip of my Earl Grey tea, looking out over the balcony of my hotel suite. The city skyline was glittering, completely unbothered by the absolute financial earthquake I had just unleashed.
“I’m not sure what you mean, Mark,” I said smoothly. “I simply did what you and your fiancée asked. I left.”
“My black card just declined at the country club!” His voice cracked, rising an octave. “And when I called the bank, they said the account was frozen. Then the wedding planner called—Mom, she said the venue canceled because the wire transfer bounced. Chloe is having a panic attack in the bathroom. Fix this. Now.”
“I can’t,” I replied, my tone lighter than air. “You see, Mark, when your father passed, he didn't just leave a pile of money. He left an empire, heavily regulated by a very specific set of trust documents. Documents that required you to maintain an active, respectful standing within the family to access your trust fund.”
“I am your son!”
“You were my son,” I corrected gently. “Yesterday, you were a man who allowed his fiancée to demand my home, and then you tried to evict me from the property I built. According to Section 4, Paragraph B of the family trust—which you never bothered to read—any attempt to defraud, extort, or unjustly remove the primary trustee triggers an automatic dissolution of your privileges.”
Dead silence on the line.

“You cut me off?” he gasped.
“You cut yourself off, Mark. I just filed the paperwork. Have a lovely afternoon.” I hung up, blocked his number, and smiled. The real storm was just beginning.
