Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Heir

I didn't have to wait long for the fallout.
Two days later, Julian was sitting in the sprawling library of his parents' estate. The anonymous package lay open on the mahogany desk.
I wasn't there, but Cole had managed to clone Julian’s phone, giving us access to the audio of the room. We listened to the destruction in real-time.
“Valerie!” Julian’s voice roared through the speaker, distorted by rage.
We heard the clicking of Valerie’s heels on hardwood.
“Julian? What’s wrong?”
“You lied to me!” The sound of a heavy glass tumbler shattering against a wall made Maya flinch. “The boy isn't mine! You bought donor sperm in Geneva and forged the paternity papers! Tell me it’s a lie!”
Silence hung in the audio feed. A heavy, suffocating silence.
“Julian, please, I can explain—” Valerie sobbed, the polished VP facade completely crumbling. “You wanted an heir so badly! I just wanted to give you what Clara couldn't!”
“Get out,” Julian’s voice was lethal, completely devoid of emotion.
“Julian, our family—”
“You have ten minutes to pack your things and leave this house before I call the police and have you arrested for corporate embezzlement! I know about the missing funds, Valerie. You're done. Get out of my sight!”
We listened as a door slammed violently.
Maya paused the audio. She looked at me across the table.
"He knows," she whispered. "He lost the company, he lost his mistress, and he just found out his precious male heir is a complete stranger."

I looked down at Hazel, who was cooing softly in my arms, completely unaware of the empire falling around her.
"Now," I said softly, "he’s going to realize what he threw away. And he’s going to come crawling back."
