Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle Shatters

Total chaos erupted in the boardroom.

Investors began shouting over one another. Journalists scrambled to dial their editors. Valerie was furiously whispering into Julian’s ear, but Julian looked completely paralyzed.

"This is fraud!" Valerie finally shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at me. "You forged those documents because you're bitter that Julian chose me and his rightful son!"

I turned my gaze to Valerie. I didn't raise my voice, but the sheer coldness of my tone silenced the room again.

"Valerie," I said softly. "You are the VP of Public Relations. You should know better than to air your dirty laundry in front of the press. But since you brought it up..."

I looked at the journalists. "My husband abandoned his newborn daughter in the recovery room to secure his 'legacy' with another woman. A legacy he doesn't even own."

Julian slammed his hands on the table. "Enough! Clara, we are going into my office. Now."

"No," I replied smoothly. "You are leaving my building. Marcus, please inform the board of my first executive action."

Marcus smiled. "As majority shareholder, Clara Navarro is exercising her right to restructure the executive suite. Julian Sterling is hereby suspended as CEO, pending a full forensic audit of the company's finances."

"You can't do this!" Julian roared, lunging across the table. Two board members had to pull him back.

"I just did," I whispered.

I turned my back on him and walked out of the room, the flashes of cameras lighting up my path like a runway. Maya followed, a massive grin on her face, Hazel sleeping peacefully against her chest.

We took the private executive elevator down to the lobby.

When the doors closed, I leaned against the glass, letting out a shaky breath.

May you like

"You did it," Maya whispered, squeezing my shoulder.

"No," I corrected her, watching the city skyline drop away as we descended. "I just broke his pride. Now, I’m going to take everything else."
