Chapter 4 - Through the Shadows

The hidden corridor was damp and smelled of cold stone. We moved in absolute silence, the only sound the soft padding of Harper’s shoes and the rhythmic, steady breathing of my sleeping son. The tunnel descended sharply, a spiral staircase wrapped entirely inside the central structural columns of the mansion.
"Mr. Bianchi," Harper whispered, her voice trembling slightly in the dark. "If your brother is behind this... who can you trust?"
"No one," I replied flatly. "In my world, loyalty is only valid until the price gets too high. Vincenzo just outbid me."
"But your son... how could he do that to his own nephew?"
"Because in the mafia, blood isn't a bond. It's a target," I said, my jaw clenching as we navigated a tight turn. "Vincenzo knew that as long as Luca was alive, he would never sit on the throne. And he knew that if he killed me directly, the capos would demand revenge. But a grieving father committing suicide after the tragic, 'natural' death of his infant son? That’s a tragedy the syndicate would accept."
We reached the bottom of the staircase. A heavy steel door stood between us and the private underground garage where I kept my fleet of armored vehicles. I pressed my ear against the cold metal, listening intently.
Footsteps. Two men pacing across the concrete floor. Vincenzo wasn't taking any chances; he had secured the exits.
I turned back to Harper. In the harsh beam of the flashlight, I could see the absolute terror in her eyes, but underneath it was a core of undeniable steel. This was a woman who had survived a monster, who had lost her own child, and who had just risked her life to save mine.
"Harper, listen to me," I whispered, reaching out to gently touch her shoulder. "When I open this door, it’s going to get loud. Do not look at what I do to them. Keep your eyes closed, hold Luca, and run straight to the black SUV on the left. Can you do that?"
May you like
She swallowed hard, nodding once. "I won't let them touch him."
"I know you won't," I said. I clicked the safety off my pistol. I took a deep breath, kicked the heavy steel bar on the door, and exploded into the garage.
