Chapter 8 - The Apex Trap

Midnight.
The underground parking garage of the Apex building was tomb-silent. The harsh fluorescent lights hummed above, casting long, stark shadows across the endless rows of concrete pillars. I stood completely alone by the trunk of a black armored SUV, holding a silver, metallic briefcase.
No security guards. No police presence. Just me, dressed in head-to-toe tactical black, a suppressed sidearm holstered firmly at my hip, waiting in the suffocating silence.
At exactly 12:05 AM, the main lights in the garage flickered and died. Emergency red backup lights bathed the concrete in a sinister, bloody glow.
They had taken the bait.
Three armored black vans screeched down the entrance ramp, tires squealing, blocking the only exits. The doors slid open, and a dozen heavily armed mercenaries poured out into the garage. They moved with terrifying military precision, fanning out to completely surround my vehicle.
At the front of the pack was a man I recognized instantly from my intelligence files: Viktor Volkov himself. He wore heavy Kevlar body armor and carried a compact, deadly assault rifle.
"Ms. Vance," Viktor called out, his voice echoing loudly in the cavernous space. "You fight quite well for a corporate executive. But you are vastly outgunned. Drop the briefcase on the floor and walk away. You get to live today."
I casually rested my hand on the hood of the SUV. "I told your men yesterday, Viktor. The debt was canceled."
"And I do not take no for an answer," he sneered, raising his rifle and aiming it at my chest. "Kill her."
I didn't reach for my gun. I reached into my jacket pocket and pressed a single, red detonator switch.

BOOM.
The massive metal rolling doors of the parking garage slammed shut with an explosive, deafening charge, sealing off the exits completely. The mercenaries spun around in a blind panic, their weapons raised.
