Chapter 4 - The Empty Throne

Forty-eight hours later, I stood in the penthouse executive office of Apex Strategic.

The massive floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooked the sprawling metropolis, the city lights reflecting off the polished mahogany desk that had once belonged to my father. The room still smelled faintly of his old Cuban cigars and worn leather.

My attorney, David, stood nervously by the heavy double doors, clutching a thick leather binder to his chest.

"The corporate transition is fully complete," David said, his voice laced with awe. "With Julian and your mother in federal custody without bail, the board of directors held an emergency vote. You are now the undisputed CEO and majority shareholder of Apex Strategic."

"And the embezzled funds?" I asked, turning away from the window and tracing a finger over the brass nameplate on the desk.

"Julian moved nearly eighty million dollars through shell companies in the Cayman Islands," David swallowed hard, looking at his notes. "The FBI seized forty million of it. The other forty... it's gone. He was funneling it somewhere dark. Off the grid."

I turned around, leaning against the cold glass. "Julian isn't smart enough to launder forty million dollars without leaving a breadcrumb trail. Who was he paying?"

David hesitated, opening his briefcase to pull out a single, heavily encrypted flash drive. "Our internal forensic accountants managed to decrypt one of his offshore ledgers before the FBI took the main servers. Julian wasn't just stealing from your father's legacy. He was paying off a massive, dangerous debt."

"To whom?"

"A private syndicate," David whispered, his voice trembling as he handed me the drive. "They call themselves The Volkov Group. Eastern European private military contractors. Highly illegal. Highly lethal. Julian promised them proprietary weapons blueprints from Apex in exchange for muscle to secure the hostile company takeover."

A cold, familiar realization settled in the pit of my stomach. Julian hadn't just tried to steal my inheritance; he had sold our national security secrets to a shadow syndicate. And now that he was locked in a federal cell, The Volkov Group was missing forty million dollars and their promised blueprints.

They would come looking for the new CEO.
