Chapter 8 - The Interrogation

The penthouse was swarming with private security forces and silent, heavily armed cleaners who were removing the bodies.
Cameron sat on the edge of her massive bed while a private doctor carefully stitched the shallow graze on her side.
Leo was fast asleep beside her, exhausted by the trauma, his small hand gripping the fabric of her blood-stained shirt.
Matteo stood by the window, smoking a cigarette—a habit he had quit five years ago—his eyes dark and dangerous.
“We have one of the mercenaries alive in the basement,” Matteo said quietly after the doctor packed his bag and left the room.
Cameron winced as she adjusted her posture, looking at the man who was clearly warring with his own dark nature.
“Do what you have to do to keep us safe, Matteo,” she told him, her voice filled with unwavering trust.
Matteo looked at her in surprise, expecting her to be horrified by the brutal reality of his world.
“You don't think I am a monster?” he asked, his voice barely a raspy whisper.
Cameron stood up slowly, ignoring the stinging pain in her side, and walked over to where he stood.
She took the cigarette from his fingers, stubbed it out in a heavy glass ashtray, and placed her hands on his chest.
“A monster hurts innocent people for power,” she said softly, looking deep into his haunted brown eyes.
“You are a father doing whatever it takes to protect your family.”
Matteo let out a shuddering breath, wrapping his arms carefully around her waist to avoid her fresh stitches.
He leaned down and kissed her deeply, drawing strength from her fiery spirit and unbreakable courage.
Ten minutes later, Matteo descended into the soundproof basement beneath the high-rise building.
The surviving mercenary was strapped to a metal chair, bruised and bleeding from the fight.
Matteo did not yell, nor did he use the terrifying tools laid out on the nearby steel table.
He simply placed his phone in front of the man, displaying a live satellite feed of a small house in the suburbs.
“That is your wife and daughter,” Matteo stated with a chilling, deadpan calmness that made the mercenary flinch.
“Tell me exactly where Lorenzo is hiding, or I make one phone call, and their house burns to the ground.”
The mercenary broke instantly, sobbing and begging for his family's life as he spilled every detail of the plot.
Lorenzo was hiding at the old shipping docks, preparing to flee the country on a private cargo vessel at midnight.

Matteo picked up his phone, sending a quick text message to his elite strike team.
The hunt was finally over, and it was time for the execution.
