Chapter 10 - The Impossible Family

The sun was rising over the Manhattan skyline, casting a warm golden glow through the repaired penthouse windows.

Cameron was packing her small, worn suitcase in her bedroom, folding her few original belongings carefully.

Lorenzo was behind bars, the danger was completely neutralized, and the Duca family was safe.

She felt a crushing ache in her chest, assuming her contract was finished now that her role as bait was over.

“What exactly do you think you are doing?” a deep voice demanded from the doorway.

Cameron turned around to see Matteo standing there, leaning against the frame with a furious, panicked look in his eyes.

“My job is done, Matteo,” she said softly, forcing back the tears threatening to spill.

“You found Sofia’s killer, Leo is safe, and I shouldn't impose on your life anymore.”

Matteo crossed the room in three long strides, grabbing her suitcase and tossing it carelessly onto the floor.

He grabbed her hands, pulling her against his chest and forcing her to look into his dark, passionate eyes.

“I didn’t fall in love with a ghost, Cameron,” he vowed, his voice thick with raw, unfiltered emotion.

“I fell in love with the fiery, stubborn woman who knelt on the floor for a broken boy and fought armed men to protect him.”

Cameron gasped, her heart swelling with an overwhelming joy she had never experienced in her entire life.

“You love me?” she whispered, searching his face for any sign of hesitation.

“More than my empire, more than my own life,” Matteo confessed, kissing her with a fierce, possessive devotion.

Just then, the door pushed open completely, and Leo wandered into the room rubbing his sleepy eyes.

He looked at the suitcase on the floor, then looked up at Cameron with sudden, terrifying panic.

“Mama going away?” the toddler whimpered, his bottom lip starting to tremble violently.

Cameron broke away from Matteo, falling to her knees and pulling the little boy into a massive, tight hug.

“No, baby,” she cried happily, burying her face in his dark curls.

“Mama isn’t going anywhere, I am staying right here with you forever.”

Matteo knelt beside them, wrapping his strong arms around both of his incredible, resilient survivors.

The impossible child had found his peace, the ruthless billionaire had found his heart, and the lonely orphan had finally found her home.
