Chapter 10 - A New Legacy

Six months had passed since the dramatic collapse of Victor Harrison’s corrupt empire.

The arrogant billionaire was currently sitting in a federal prison, entirely stripped of his power and his dignity.

Vanguard Innovations had officially absorbed Harrison Industries, creating the largest, most ethical tech conglomerate in the world.

But the corporate victories were nothing compared to the beautiful chaos happening in my backyard.

I sat on the wooden porch of our new, secluded lake house, watching the evening sun reflect off the calm water.

Down by the muddy shore, Ethan was completely covered in dirt, trying to help the children build a massive sandcastle.

"No, dad, the moat needs to be deeper to keep the dragons out!" Silas yelled, pointing a plastic shovel aggressively at the sand.

"I am digging as fast as I can, buddy!" Ethan laughed, aggressively scooping wet sand with his bare hands.

Maya was sitting on Ethan’s shoulders, perfectly content to oversee the construction from her comfortable throne.

Leo and Asher were engineering a complicated water flow system using empty juice boxes and sticks.

They looked like a real, beautifully messy family.

Ethan had spent every single day of the last six months proving that he was no longer a coward.

He had patiently earned their trust, enduring their tantrums and celebrating their little victories.

And slowly, carefully, he had started to earn my trust back, too.

Ethan brushed the sand off his knees and walked up the grassy hill toward the porch.

He looked exhausted, sunburned, and completely, blissfully happy.

He sat down on the wooden swing next to me, lightly bumping his shoulder against mine.

"The fortress is secure," Ethan reported, wrapping a warm, strong arm around my waist.

"Good," I smiled, leaning my head softly against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.

"I love you, Emma," he murmured into my hair, his voice filled with overwhelming gratitude and peace.

"I love you too, Ethan," I finally replied, letting go of the very last piece of my bitter armor.

We sat together on the porch, watching our four incredible children conquer their little sandy kingdom.

Victor had once paid me one hundred and twenty million dollars to completely disappear from their world.

Instead, I had come back and bought the entire world for them.
