Chapter 8 - Blurring the Lines

With Eleanor in jail awaiting trial and the media shifting their narrative to praise Julian and Clara, the Vance estate settled into a new normal.
But it wasn't the old normal.
The boundary between "employer" and "employee" had irrevocably blurred. Julian no longer worked late at the office. He came home by 5:00 PM every day. He sat on the floor of the playroom, letting Mia, Chloe, and Lily put butterfly clips in his hair. And always, his eyes drifted to Clara.
One rainy evening, after the girls had been put to bed, Clara was in the massive kitchen making tea. She wore comfortable sweatpants and a loose sweater, having discarded the formal uniforms Julian had outright banned upon his return.
“Smells good,” a deep voice rumbled.
Clara jumped, almost dropping her mug. Julian was leaning against the doorframe, watching her. There was a softness in his gaze that made her breath catch.
“Just chamomile,” Clara said, her heart suddenly racing. “Would you like some?”
“I’d love some.” He walked in, closing the distance between them. He didn't sit at the island; he came right up beside her at the counter. The scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the rain.
“I haven't properly thanked you,” Julian said softly. “For staying. For forgiving me.”
“You defended me to the world, Julian,” Clara replied, using his first name naturally for the first time. “We’re even.”
May you like
“No, we’re not,” he murmured, lifting a hand to gently tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed against her cheek, sending a jolt of electricity down her spine. “I almost lost the best thing that ever happened to this family. The best thing that ever happened to me.”
Clara looked up into his eyes, reading the undeniable intent there. The air in the kitchen grew thick, charged with years of unsaid tension.
