Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

“She locked us in the dark!” Mia, the eldest of the triplets, wailed, her small hands clutching Clara’s apron like a lifeline. “She locked us in the dark room with the heavy door and said if we told you about the shiny rock, she would make sure you went to jail forever!”
Chloe and Lily pressed against Clara’s legs, their small frames trembling violently. Chloe lifted her tear-streaked face, pointing a small, scratched finger back toward the towering iron gates of the estate. “The monster lady pushed us. She said we were in her way. She took her ring and scratched my arm when I tried to run to you!”
The words hung in the crisp afternoon air, heavy and suffocating.
A few yards away, Julian Vance froze. The billionaire, a man known for his icy composure in boardrooms and his ruthless negotiation tactics, looked as though the ground had simply vanished beneath his expensive leather shoes. The color drained from his face, leaving him pale and wide-eyed.
“What did you say?” Julian’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried a terrifying edge. He took a slow step forward.
The girls shrieked, instantly hiding their faces in Clara’s skirts. They weren't running to their father. They were hiding from the house he had built, from the woman he had brought into it.
Clara’s maternal instincts, honed over four years of late-night fevers and scraped knees, flared into an inferno. She didn't care that this man could ruin her life with a phone call. She didn't care about his wealth. She wrapped her arms protectively around the three sobbing girls and leveled a glare of absolute venom at the tycoon.
“Stay back,” Clara snapped, her voice devoid of the deferential tone she had used for years. “You’ve done enough, Julian.”
Julian stopped, raising his hands in a placating gesture. His chest heaved as he stared at the bleeding scratches on Chloe’s arms. The reality of what he had just done—who he had just trusted—crashed into him with the force of a freight train. Eleanor. His beautiful, sophisticated fiancée. She had planted the diamond. She had hurt his children.
“Clara, I…” Julian choked on the words, the realization of his colossal failure paralyzing him.
Before he could finish, the piercing sound of high heels clicking against the pavement echoed from the estate gates. Eleanor Sterling emerged, looking flawless in her designer silk dress, her expression twisted in furious disbelief.

“Julian! What on earth are you doing in the street? The paparazzi could be anywhere! Come away from that thief and those unruly brats!”
Julian slowly turned his head. The look in his eyes was no longer panic. It was pure, unadulterated rage.
