Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

Before the final strike, I needed to make sure the girls would never carry the trauma of this war. I hired a team of elite pediatric trauma specialists and nannies to stay with them at the compound, guarded by Marcus’s best men.

As I watched them sleep that night, Rosa’s confession replayed in my head. The horror of Elena’s final days.

Elena had known. In those last few weeks, she must have realized the medicine was making her worse. She must have felt the babies fighting to survive inside her. The sheer terror she must have felt, trapped in a hospital controlled by my mother, knowing I was entirely blind to the truth. She had fought to stay alive just long enough to deliver them, trading her last breath for their first.

My mother had watched her die. Julian had watched her die.

My phone buzzed. It was an alert from my remaining corporate moles.

Emergency Shareholder Meeting called for 10:00 AM tomorrow. Vote of No Confidence against Sebastian Cross. Julian positioned to take over as CEO.

They thought wrong.
