Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

One Year Later.

The mountain cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains looked entirely different. The overgrown weeds had been cleared, replaced by a massive garden of blooming jasmine. A wooden swing set sat near the edge of the lake, and the sounds of laughter echoed through the pine trees.

I stood on the porch, holding two mugs of hot cocoa, watching Maya and Mila chase a golden retriever puppy across the grass. They were four years old now. The shadows under their eyes were gone, replaced by the bright, unburdened joy that every child deserves.

They wore matching denim overalls, their auburn curls bouncing in the wind.

“Daddy, look!” Mila yelled, pointing at a butterfly landing on the puppy’s nose.

“I see it, sweetheart,” I smiled, my heart swelling with a warmth I thought I had lost forever.

The trial had been a media circus, but the evidence was insurmountable. My mother and Julian were sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Veronica took a plea deal and would spend the next twenty years behind bars. I had liquidated the family’s corrupted assets, completely restructured Cross Enterprises, and transferred the majority of my wealth into an impenetrable trust for the twins.

I walked down the wooden steps, setting the mugs on a picnic table. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the silver locket.

I hadn't opened it in a year. I popped the clasp, looking at the tiny photo of myself, and the faded note.

Protect our girls.

I knelt down in the grass. Maya and Mila ran over, tackling me in a mess of giggles and puppy kisses. I held them tight, breathing in the scent of their hair, feeling the steady, strong beat of their hearts against my chest.

“I love you, Daddy,” Maya whispered, burying her face in my neck.

“I love you too,” Mila echoed.

I looked up at the clear blue sky over the mountains. The pain of losing Elena would never fully vanish, but the gaping wound in my soul had been healed by the two beautiful miracles she had left behind.

“I protected them, Elena,” I whispered to the wind. “I got them.”

The nightmare was over. We were finally home.
