Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Massacre

Two days later, I was propped up in my private hospital suite. The room looked more like a corporate command center than a medical ward. Marcus had set up dual monitors, a secure conference line, and a stack of legal dossiers on my bedside table.
Today was the emergency board meeting of Vanguard Zenith—or rather, what was left of it.
Julian, having posted a massive bail using funds borrowed from a very shady, very angry private lender, was permitted to attend the meeting virtually. He was fighting desperately to retain his shares, claiming the hostile takeover was fraudulent.
I adjusted my silk robe, making sure the bruising on my neck was clearly visible, and nodded to Marcus. "Put them on screen."
The monitor flickered to life, showing the sleek, glass-walled boardroom of Vanguard Zenith. Six board members sat around the table, looking pale and exhausted. Julian appeared on a separate feed from his lawyer’s office, looking completely unhinged.
"This meeting is a sham!" Julian immediately shouted into his microphone. "This 'Aethelgard Trust' is a shell company! You can't just seize a fifty-million-dollar firm overnight!"
"Actually, Julian, I can," I said softly.
The entire boardroom went dead silent. Julian’s jaw dropped.
"Elena?" he whispered.
"Hello, Julian. Hello, gentlemen," I said, staring directly into the camera. "For those of you who don't know, I am the sole beneficiary and executor of the Aethelgard Trust. The trust that just bought out your debts, seized your assets, and currently owns the chairs you are sitting on."
Chaos erupted on the feed, but I held up a hand, silencing them.
"Julian," I continued, my voice slicing through the noise like a scalpel. "Did you really think I didn't know? Did you think I sat in that house for three years, smiling and hosting your dinners, without understanding how you leveraged our personal assets to keep your sinking ship afloat?"
"You... you stole my company!" he spat, his face turning purple.
"I didn't steal it. I bought it," I corrected him. "When you forced me to sign those 'routine tax documents' last year, you unwittingly signed over the mezzanine debt of this firm to an escrow account I controlled. You were too busy sleeping with Chloe in my guest room to read the fine print."
I looked at the board members. "Gentlemen, Julian Hayes has driven this company to the brink of bankruptcy to fund his lavish lifestyle. As the new majority shareholder, my first motion is the immediate and permanent termination of Julian Hayes, without severance."
"Seconded," the oldest board member said instantly, not even looking at Julian.
"You can't do this!" Julian screamed, standing up and knocking his chair over. "I'll sue you! I'll take the house, the cars, everything!"

"The house is in foreclosure, Julian," I smiled, a cold, terrifying smile. "And Chloe just packed her bags this morning. You have nothing left. Marcus, cut his feed."
The screen went black. I leaned back into my hospital pillows, taking a long, deep breath. The first head had rolled.
