Chapter 10 - The Empire Reborn

One year later.
I stood at the head of the long glass table in the boardroom of the newly rebranded Aethelgard Holdings. I wore a sharp, tailored white suit, my hair pulled back into an immaculate twist. The bruising on my back had long since faded, replaced by the invisible armor of absolute power.
The boardroom was packed with investors, developers, and politicians. They weren't looking at me with the patronizing smiles they used to give Julian. They were looking at me with profound respect, and a healthy dose of fear.
"In Q3 alone, we have stabilized all failing assets and doubled our profit margins," I told the room, clicking to the next slide on the massive presentation screen. "We are no longer playing defense. We are acquiring."
Richard Sterling raised his glass of sparkling water from the end of the table. "To the CEO."
"To the CEO!" the room echoed.
I smiled, a genuine, powerful smile. I concluded the meeting, shaking hands and signing contracts that secured the future of my children for generations to come.
When the boardroom emptied, I walked back into my massive corner office. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the city I now owned a substantial piece of.
On my desk sat a silver picture frame. Inside was a photo of Alexander and Victoria, laughing in the grass of our private estate.
My phone buzzed on the desk. It was Marcus.
"Elena, the final paperwork for the Hayes estate just cleared. The old mansion has been bulldozed. We're breaking ground on the new luxury development tomorrow."
"Perfect, Marcus. Have the construction crew lay the new foundation deep. I want no trace of the old floorboards left."
"Consider it done, boss."
I hung up the phone, looking out over the glittering city skyline. The man who had dragged me across the floor thinking I was weak was rotting in a concrete cell, while I stood at the very top of the world.

I pressed my hand against the cool glass of the window, feeling the steady, unbroken rhythm of my own heartbeat.
I didn't just survive the storm. I became it.
