Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

But Marco hadn't just leaked information to the Russians. He had brokered a hostile takeover.

On the eighth morning, Clara woke up to the sound of crunching snow outside the cabin. Gabriel was already out of bed, standing by the window with a sniper rifle.

“Get Leo to the panic room under the floorboards,” Gabriel commanded, his voice cold and detached. “Do not come out until I open the hatch.”

“Gabriel—”

“Do it!”

Clara grabbed Leo from his bed, signing Quiet, Danger, Hide rapidly. Leo nodded, his small face pale but brave.

Clara locked them in the reinforced concrete bunker beneath the floor. Above them, all hell broke loose.

Gunfire ripped through the cabin. Clara held Leo to her chest, feeling the concussive blasts vibrate through the earth. She heard shouts in Russian. She heard Marco’s voice shouting orders. And she heard the terrifying, methodical sound of Gabriel Costa executing his enemies.

Silence eventually fell.

Ten minutes passed. Then twenty.

Clara was shaking. She grabbed a heavy iron wrench from a tool shelf in the bunker, preparing to fight to the death if Marco opened the hatch.
