Chapter 6 - The Shattered Ego

The words echoed in Julian’s head like a death knell. Seraphina Sterling. She owns us all.
He stumbled back from the van, nearly tripping over the gravel driveway. Memories flashed before his eyes in violent succession. Seraphina sitting quietly with her canvas briefcase. Seraphina typing late into the night. Seraphina calmly suggesting financial restructuring which he loudly dismissed, only for the "anonymous angel investors" to mandate those exact changes days later.
She hadn't been a charity case. She had been their savior, operating in absolute secrecy, protecting his fragile ego. And he had struck her across the face in front of the entire city's elite.
"What is he talking about, Julian?" Beatrice demanded, shaking his arm. "What does that mousy little girl have to do with the Sterling Sovereign Fund?"
"She is the Fund, Mother," Julian whispered, his voice hollow. "She's not a beggar. She's the heiress. We didn't rescue her. She was keeping us alive on life support."
Beatrice’s jaw dropped. The color drained from her perfectly contoured face. "No. No, that's impossible. She wore off-the-rack clothing! She drove a Honda!"
"It was a test, Mother!" Julian exploded, the realization tearing his sanity apart. "And we failed. Spectacularly."
His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was an email. A formal invitation delivered via secure server.
