Chapter 6 - Cat and Mouse

The police couldn't get a warrant for the crawlspace fast enough based on Arthur's hearsay. I knew David would realize the drive was missing soon, and he would make a move for it.

I made a reckless decision. I left Lily safely locked at my sister's house with her massive golden retriever, and I drove back to my own home in the dead of night.

The house felt like a tomb. I crept around the back, using my spare key. I slipped into the basement, clicking on a small penlight. I crawled into the filthy, damp crawlspace, sweeping away cobwebs, until my hand brushed against a small, metal lockbox duct-taped to the plumbing pipes.

I ripped it free. Inside was a sleek black hard drive.

Suddenly, the floorboards above my head creaked. Heavy footsteps.

David was here. He had broken the restraining order. I held my breath, clutching the lockbox to my chest as dust fell into my eyes. He walked directly above me, heading for the basement door.

"I know you're down there," his voice echoed down the stairs, devoid of any warmth. "I saw your car parked down the street. Give it to me, and I’ll leave you and Lily alone."
