Chapter 5 - The Whistleblower

The case needed a silver bullet, and it arrived in the form of a terrified, jittery man named Arthur. He had worked with David at the old pharmaceutical firm.
Arthur contacted me through a secure email, asking to meet at a crowded diner downtown. I went with Detective Miller sitting in a booth nearby, out of sight.
"David is dangerous," Arthur whispered, frantically stirring his black coffee. "The buyers he’s dealing with... they're foreign contractors. They are getting impatient. The data he collected from Lily was the final puzzle piece. If he hands over his encrypted hard drive to them, he gets five million dollars and a private flight out of the country."
"Where is the hard drive?" I demanded.
"He hid it," Arthur said. "He told me once that he kept his most valuable assets in the place his wife hated most. Where would that be?"

My heart stalled. The basement crawlspace. I had always hated it down there—it was full of spiders, damp, and smelling of mildew. I refused to ever go in. David knew it was the one place I would never look.
He hadn't retrieved it before his arrest. It was still in the house.
