Chapter 3 - Ghosts in the Machine

They found refuge in an abandoned bakery in Queens, a property Anthony had bought years ago intending to build a commissary kitchen.
It was dusty, stripped of electricity, but completely disconnected from Preston's digital web.
Anthony lit a heavy camping lantern he kept in the emergency supplies, the yellow light casting long shadows.
Sofia sat on an overturned milk crate, booting up a burner laptop she had smuggled out in her apron pocket.
She plugged in the small black drive.
"Okay," she breathed, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Let's see exactly what Marcus has been doing."
Rows of encrypted audio files filled the screen, categorized by date, time, and table number.
Sofia bypassed the first layer of security with a backdoor she had coded months ago.
"Listen to this," she said, clicking on an audio file labeled 'Table 4 - VIP Room'.
A familiar, booming voice filled the dusty room. It was the City Comptroller.
He was discussing a massive real estate zoning bribe, explicitly detailing how the money was being laundered.
Another file contained a state senator arranging a brutal cover-up of a hit-and-run accident.
"My God," Anthony whispered, realizing the magnitude of the corruption. "They were using my restaurant as a confessional for criminals."
"And Marcus was holding the tape," Sofia added grimly.
"He was blackmailing them for political favors, liquor licenses, zoning permits. That's how the restaurant group expanded so fast."
She clicked on a folder marked with a red warning icon.
"These are the death files," Sofia said, her voice shaking.
They listened in horrified silence as Marcus and a notoriously violent mob boss calmly negotiated the murder of a rival union leader over a plate of veal parmesan.
"We have to take this to the police," Anthony said immediately.
Sofia shook her head. "We can't. Preston has compromised the NYPD's servers."
"If we walk into a precinct, the officers on Marcus's payroll will intercept us before we even reach a detective's desk."
"Then how do we stop them?" Anthony asked, feeling the walls closing in.

Sofia looked up, a dangerous fire igniting in her eyes.
"We don't take it to the police. We broadcast it to the world."
