Chapter 1 - The Devil in the Dining Room

Anthony stared at the top of the stairs, his heart pounding a violent rhythm against his ribs.
Marcus Vance stood there, perfectly tailored in a navy blue suit, his silver hair catching the dim basement light.
For twenty-five years, Marcus had been the financial genius behind the Romano Empire, the man who handled the investors while Anthony perfected the pasta.
Now, Marcus descended the concrete steps with the slow, deliberate pace of a predator cornering its prey.
"You always were too sentimental, Anthony," Marcus said, his voice echoing in the damp dish room.
Preston shifted his weight, his hand subtly moving toward the inside pocket of his gray suit jacket.
Sofia tightened her grip on her father's arm, her trembling fingers digging into his chef's coat.
"Marcus," Anthony breathed, the betrayal tasting like ash in his mouth. "You let this psychopath cage my daughter?"
"I secured an asset," Marcus corrected smoothly, stopping at the bottom of the stairs. "Sofia is a brilliant coder, but she was too curious for her own good."
He gestured to the smashed security camera on the floor. "Information is the new currency, Anthony."
"Pasta and truffles pay the bills, but blackmail builds empires," Marcus continued, a cold smile forming on his lips.
Preston finally pulled his hand from his jacket, revealing a sleek, suppressed pistol.
"Give me the drive, Sofia," Preston ordered, his voice devoid of the charming warmth he used at family dinners.
Anthony realized in a split second that neither he nor his daughter were supposed to walk out of this basement alive.
He didn't think; he acted on pure instinct honed by decades in a chaotic kitchen.
Anthony grabbed the industrial spray hose from the sink, squeezing the heavy metal trigger to maximum pressure.
A blast of scalding, two-hundred-degree water shot directly into Preston's face.
Preston screamed, dropping the gun as the boiling water blinded him.
Marcus lunged forward, but Anthony shoved a towering rack of heavy ceramic plates directly into his path.
The rack tipped, sending hundreds of plates crashing onto the hard tile floor, burying Marcus under a mountain of shattered porcelain.
"Run!" Anthony roared, grabbing Sofia's hand.
They didn't head for the stairs; Anthony knew the kitchen above would be full of Marcus's loyal staff.

Instead, he dragged Sofia toward the heavy steel door of the wine cellar, pulling his master key from his pocket.
He unlocked it, shoved her inside, and slammed the deadbolt shut just as Preston blindly fired a shot into the darkness.
