Chapter 8 - The Grandfather’s Verdict

Julian didn't follow her. He knew that throwing more words—or worse, more solutions—at her would only widen the fracture.

Instead, he walked down the long, silent hallway to the guest wing.

Arthur Lin was sitting in a recliner by the window, watching the rain streak against the glass. The LVAD machine hummed softly beside him. He looked over as Julian stood in the doorway, looking entirely defeated.

"She has a temper," Arthur noted quietly, his voice raspy but strong. "Gets it from her mother."

Julian stepped into the room, leaning against the doorframe. "Arthur, I don't know what to do. I give her everything I have. I try to make her life perfect, and she looks at me like I'm suffocating her."

Arthur chuckled, a low, rumbling sound. He gestured for Julian to sit in the chair opposite him. The billionaire obeyed, sitting awkwardly in the presence of the retired mechanic.

"Let me tell you about Maya’s parents," Arthur said, looking back out the window. "My son, David, he loved her mother, Sarah, fiercely. But David was a proud man. He wanted to provide. When the recession hit and he lost his job, he wouldn't let Sarah work. He took out loans. He hid the bills. He tried to shield her from the reality of our poverty because he thought that's what a man was supposed to do."

Arthur turned to look at Julian, his dark eyes piercing right through the younger man’s armor.

"It destroyed them," Arthur said bluntly. "Sarah didn't want a shield. She wanted a partner. When the debt finally crashed down on them, the stress caused the car accident that took them both. Maya was four years old."

Julian felt a cold knot form in his stomach. Maya had never told him the details of how her parents died.

"Maya spent her entire life watching me struggle to raise her, refusing help from anyone," Arthur continued softly. "She learned early that depending on a man to shield you only leaves you blind when the arrows actually hit. She doesn't want you to build a wall around her, Julian. She just wants you to stand beside her in the fight."

"I am terrified of her getting hurt," Julian confessed, his voice breaking. It was the most honest he had been with anyone since his brother’s funeral. "If something happens to her, Arthur... I won't survive it. My money is the only way I know how to keep her safe."

"Your money is a tool, son. It's not a blanket," Arthur said gently. "You can't buy her a safe life without buying her freedom in the process. Maya is a healer. Healers belong in the mud, where the bleeding happens. If you pull her out of the mud and put her in a tower, she will wither and die."

Arthur reached over, placing a frail, weathered hand on Julian’s expensive suit sleeve.

"She loves you, Julian. She loves the man who sat in the dirt with her in the hospital hallway. She doesn't need Vance Enterprises. She just needs Julian. Dismantle the cage, before you lock yourself out of her heart forever."

Julian sat in the quiet room for a long time. The truth of the old man’s words cut through him with surgical precision. He had spent three years manipulating her life from the shadows, and now he was trying to do it in the light.

He stood up, a new, terrifying clarity settling over him.

He didn't need to be her savior. He just needed to be her equal.
