Chapter 3 - Scorched Earth

The boardroom of Vance Enterprises was a sprawling temple of glass and steel, hovering fifty stories above the city skyline. It was designed to intimidate, and it rarely failed.

Damian Cole sat at the far end of the massive obsidian table, looking entirely too comfortable. He was flanked by two high-priced corporate lawyers who were currently arranging thick stacks of legal documents.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open.

Julian Vance walked in. He didn't bring lawyers. He didn't bring assistants. He walked in alone, radiating a quiet, lethal energy that immediately sucked the air out of the room.

Damian offered a slick, practiced smile. “Julian. So glad you could make time. I heard you’ve been playing Florence Nightingale over at Memorial Hospital. How is the old man?”

Julian didn't sit down. He walked slowly around the edge of the table, his eyes locked on Damian. “Arthur Lin is recovering perfectly. Thank you for asking, Damian.”

Damian chuckled, leaning back in his leather chair. “Glad to hear it. Because he’s going to need his strength when he finds out he doesn’t have a home to go back to. Have you reviewed the injunction, Julian? Sixty thousand dollars in defaulted loans. The property is mine. Unless, of course, you’re ready to sign over the waterfront development rights right now.”

Damian tapped a gold pen against the table, waiting for the capitulation. He knew Julian’s weakness. He had the leverage.

Julian stopped at the head of the table. He reached into the inner pocket of his suit jacket, pulled out a single sheet of paper, and slid it across the polished obsidian surface toward Damian.

“What’s this?” Damian asked, his smile faltering slightly.

“That,” Julian said, his voice dead flat, “is a notice of hostile takeover.”

Damian’s lawyers both leaned in, reading the document. One of them went completely pale.

“This is a bluff,” Damian scoffed, though his voice lacked its previous confidence. “You can’t take over Cole Holdings. We have too much capital.”

“You had capital,” Julian corrected, leaning his palms flat against the table, looming over Damian like an apex predator. “For the last twelve hours, while you were busy trying to terrorize a waitress and a dying old man, I’ve been making phone calls. I bought out your primary investors. I shorted your stock through three shell companies, driving your valuation down by forty percent since the opening bell. And an hour ago, I purchased the debt for your flagship commercial properties in the financial district.”

Damian’s face drained of color. He looked at his lawyers, who were furiously checking their phones and laptops. The panicked expressions on their faces confirmed every word Julian said.

“You’re insane,” Damian whispered, staring at Julian as if he were looking at a ghost. “You’re intentionally tanking your own liquid assets just to burn me down? Over a girl?”

“Not a girl,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. “Maya. Her name is Maya. And you made the fatal mistake of thinking she was my weakness, Damian. She isn’t my weakness. She is the only reason I ever hold back.”

Julian stood up straight, adjusting his cuffs.

“You don’t own Arthur Lin’s debt anymore,” Julian continued smoothly. “Because as of ten minutes ago, Vance Enterprises acquired the parent bank that held the note. The debt is forgiven. The deed to his house is free and clear in his name. And as for you, Damian… you have exactly one hour to resign as CEO of your holding company, or I will leak the forensic accounting of your offshore accounts to the SEC. You won’t just be bankrupt. You’ll be in federal prison.”

Damian Cole sat in stunned, paralyzed silence. His empire, built over a decade, had been systematically dismantled in a single morning.

Julian turned and walked toward the doors.

“You’re a monster, Vance!” Damian yelled, his voice cracking with desperation.

Julian paused, his hand on the brass handle. He didn't look back.

“I know,” Julian said softly. “That’s why I keep her safe.”
