Chapter 5 - Two Worlds Colliding

The morning sun crept through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse recovery suite, casting a golden hue over the sterile medical equipment. Maya awoke in the plush armchair, a heavy, warm cashmere blanket draped carefully over her shoulders.

She blinked, momentarily disoriented by the sheer luxury of the room, before the memories of the previous night came rushing back. The terror of the diagnosis. The three-million-dollar surgery. Damian Cole’s threat. And Julian.

Julian Vance’s kiss had felt like standing in the center of a hurricane—terrifying, overwhelming, and yet entirely safe.

She turned her head. Julian was sitting on the edge of the leather sofa across the room, a tablet illuminated in his hands, his reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. He had finally discarded his tie and unbuttoned his collar, looking less like a ruthless billionaire and more like a weary, incredibly handsome man who hadn't slept in three days.

As if sensing her gaze, Julian looked up. The sharp, calculating edge in his dark eyes instantly melted into something remarkably soft.

"Good morning," he murmured, setting the tablet aside and walking over to her. "You slept for four hours. I didn't want to wake you."

"My grandfather?" Maya asked, immediately looking toward the bed.

"His vitals have been perfect all night. Dr. Thorne expects him to regain consciousness within the hour." Julian reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. His touch was hesitant, as if he still couldn't quite believe she was allowing him to be this close. "How are you feeling?"

"Like I'm waking up in someone else's life," Maya admitted, her voice thick with sleep and emotion. She looked around the opulent room. "Julian, I have to go back to my apartment. I need to get some clothes, my textbooks, and I have a shift at the diner at noon—"

"Maya, stop," Julian interrupted gently, taking her hands in his. "You are not going to the diner. I already bought out Rosie's Cafe."

Maya’s jaw dropped. "You did what?"

"I purchased the property and the business this morning at five a.m.," Julian said, completely deadpan. "I gave Rosie a massive early retirement package, and I transferred ownership to the staff. You don't have to work there anymore. You need to focus on your nursing exams and your grandfather."

Maya pulled her hands back, her heart doing a frantic, erratic beat in her chest. "Julian! You can't just buy my workplace to get me out of a shift! This is exactly what we talked about last night! I am not a pet for you to manage!"

Julian dragged a hand through his hair, looking genuinely frustrated with his own instincts. "I'm not trying to manage you, Maya. Damian Cole’s people know where that diner is. They know your face. Cole is neutralized, but there are always bottom-feeders looking to score points. Until my security team sweeps your neighborhood and your apartment, you are a target. I bought the diner because it was the fastest way to ensure you didn't walk into a vulnerable public space today."

He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a desperate rasp. "I am trying to learn how to do this your way, Maya. But you have to give me grace when it comes to your physical safety. I cannot lose you. I won't survive it."

The sheer vulnerability in his eyes took the wind out of her sails. He wasn't trying to control her; he was terrified. He was a man who had lost his family, and he was gripping her with both hands so she wouldn't slip away too.

Maya sighed, stepping into his space and wrapping her arms around his waist. She felt the heavy, tension-filled muscles of his back slowly relax as he pulled her flush against his chest, burying his face in her hair.

"Okay," she whispered against his shirt. "I won't go to the diner. But I am going to my apartment to get my nursing books. I have a final exam next week, Julian, and I will not let you buy the medical board."

Julian let out a breathy chuckle that vibrated against her. "I'll dispatch a security team to escort you. But Maya?"

She looked up at him.

"Move into my penthouse," he said, the CEO tone slipping back into his voice. "Just until Arthur is discharged. It's secure. You can study in peace. Let me take care of you, just for a little while, in the light."

Before Maya could argue, a low groan came from the hospital bed. They both turned. Arthur Lin was blinking his eyes open, the mechanical swoosh of the LVAD keeping perfect time with his new lease on life. Maya ran to his side, tears of relief falling freely, while the billionaire stood in the background, watching the woman he loved smile in the light he had bought for her.
